Link Trainer, (Under restoration.)

The RAF Link Trainer was used to instruct pilots in blind flying. It has a small cabin, large enough for one person to sit in, that is used to simulate blind flying, a situation in which the weather conditions prevent the pilot from being able to see clearly. These conditions could be caused by fog, darkness, blizzards, etc. Before the trainer was available, blind flying was taught hands on in the air, with the pilot and an instructor, and a hood over the cockpit of the plane. This method of instruction was lengthy, usually many hours, and expensive. With the Trainer, pilots learned blind flying safely (on solid ground), and by themselves.

The Link Trainer was first seen publicly in 1931. In 1932, Link Aviation of Binghamton, New York sold 100 Trainers for amusement. By World War II, 35 countries were making use of the trainer as part of their pilot training course. The Link Trainer was thought to be a tool used to pick out potential pilots from those who didn’t have and couldn’t grasp the coordination needed to fly.

The pilot sat enclosed in the cabin  of the Link Trainer, which, having no windows, was completely dark inside. Small lights  illuminated the control panel. A “plotter crab” traced the cabin’s “flight” on a table by the flight instructor, who sat at a table by the cabin adding effects such as wind resistance. The cabin of the Link Trainer moved on its base according to the pilot’s flight path.

Argus Simulator Restoration

In 1981 several founding member purchased the CFB Greenwood Argus Simulator from Crown Assets.  It was initially stored at Shearwater until moved to our present location in 1986.  For years it was in the parking lot serving mainly as a storage container.

In 1997 a decision to restore the “front end”, comprising the pilots and engineers stations, as a cockpit display.  The “back end” has been made available to our good friends at the Greenwood Museum where the anti-submarine and navigational sections will be restored and displayed.  It will be an effective complement to their preserved Argus and Argus in outdoor storage at ACAM represent one of the major continuing functions of the Base.

The Argus was, of course, a long range reconnaissance and anti-submarine aircraft that operated for many years from Bases at Greenwood, NS and Summerside PEI.  Developed from the Bristol Britannia airliner it was built by Canadair in Montreal.

With a wingspan of 142 ft 3.5 in, powered by four 3,700 HP Wright Cyclone R3350 Turbo Compound engines, and with a maximum weight of over 72 tons it was a very large aircraft representing much of the final development of the conventional piston engine era.  It had a range of over 4,000 miles.

A fully restored cockpit section will allow visitors to view the complex and impressive pilot and flight engineer stations of this historic aircraft.  The displayed R3350 engine, and Argus propeller, will complement the overall display.Argus Sim Flight Deck

 

 

As a result of many hours of dedicated work much has been accomplished by our members on this challenging project.  The exterior has been repainted where required and the surface polished.  The interior has been completely cleaned and many components removed, restored and replaced.  Many hours have been put into the restoration of the cockpit and engineer panel instrumentation and controls in the most infinite detail.

A perspex nose cone has been installed giving the simulator  really complete appearance. A search  is now underway to locate interior fittings to complete the nose compartment.
